Our mission statement at Overdale Infant School

Lighting the hearts and minds of our community.

At Overdale Infant School we create a nurturing, caring environment that promotes a love of learning, with a spirit of fun and curiosity, working together in harmony to achieve the potential of all, in connection with our community. We recognise every child is unique, and we value each one of them as an individual and hope to enlighten their minds with the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in life. We aim to meet the needs of every unique child through an exciting broad, balanced curriculum which is based on developing skills for learning and investigation of the world around us.

We work in effective partnership with the families and wider community, valuing all children as individuals and developing their interests and potential accordingly. We believe in living, laughing, learning and achieving together as a community.

Our Values

Our core values are at the heart of the school. We expect all staff and pupils to demonstrate them at all times and for children's behaviour to be outstanding. 

Respect - Adults and pupils alike show respect for each other. We promote equal opportunities through non-discriminatory practices.  We respect our belongings and the school environment.

Responsibility - Staff and children take responsibility for their actions and any disagreements are resolved in a restorative manner. We take responsibility for the world we live in and take care of the environment.

Resilience - Staff and children develop resilience in everything they do supported by those around them. We persevere when things are challenging and ask for help if we need it.

We promote our school values daily through assemblies, our curriculum and adult modelling. Certificates are awarded to children when they demonstrate one of our school values.

At Overdale Infant School we believe that:

At Overdale Infant School we promote the fundamental British Values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs. We have thought about what British Values mean to the children and how we can incorporate them into daily life. 

                  

 Pupils have the opportunity to have their voices heard through our School Council and pupil questionnaires  within school. The elections of school councillors are based solely on pupil votes. Our school behaviour policy involves rewards, which the pupils decide upon. Voting stations appear in every classroom and each day our children are given the opportunity to vote for the book they would like the class teacher to read at the end of the day. We also tackle the ideas of democracy through our curriculum and assemblies. 

           

 

Mutual Respect

Part of our school ethos and behaviour policy has revolved around our school values such as ‘Respect’, and pupils have been part of discussions and assemblies related to what this means and how it is shown. All members of the school community treat each other with respect. Displays around the school promote respect for others and this is reiterated through our classroom and learning rules, as well as our behaviour policy.

 

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

This is achieved through enhancing pupils understanding of their place in a culturally diverse society and by giving them opportunities to experience such diversity. Assemblies and discussions involving prejudices and prejudice-based bullying have been followed and supported by learning in RE and our Personal Development curriculum.  Members of different faiths or religions and those who speak languages other than English are encouraged to share their knowledge to enhance learning within classes and the school through whole school assemblies. At Overdale Infant School we receive children from a variety of different ethnic and faith groups and it is paramount that all our pupils are treated with the same respect. Pupils have the opportunity to learn about many different faiths as they progress through the school which helps to promote tolerance of everyone at our school, local community and the rest of the World.

                

 The Rule of Law

The importance of Laws, whether they be those that govern the class, the school, or the country, are consistently reinforced throughout regular school days, as well as when dealing with behaviour and through school collective worship. We have a consistent set of routines and expectations in place and these are shared regularly with pupils to support their understanding. Pupils are taught the value and reasons behind laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities that this involves and the consequences when laws are broken. Visits from authorities including our emergency services are regular parts of our calendar and help reinforce this message.

                                                          

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Individual Liberty

Within school, pupils are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment. As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young pupils to make choices safety, through provision of a safe environment and empowering education. Pupils are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms and are advised how to exercise these safely, for example through our Online Safety and Personal Development lessons. Our continuous provision in our EYFS settings enables children to make choices and lead their own learning at a very early age.
