Positive and Peaceful Places Award.

Overdale Infant School have fully embraced and achieved the Leicester City Positive and Peaceful Places Award, Leicester City’s Antibullying Award.

The school have adopted a wide range of positive strategies throughout the school day to meet the diverse needs across the school, embracing the whole school community. Children could discuss the impact of the project and how changes have helped to support them in school. They have enjoyed the addition of calm corners in every classroom that were designed by the teachers with their children. The addition of a wider range of playtime activities such as kick back football, using gym mats outside, using the trees as a shaded calm natural space and having opportunities to explore nature or to read a book. The children called playtimes ‘Happy Playtimes’ and enjoyed collecting lunch tokens for demonstrating the schools core values of respect, resilience and responsibility leading to whole class rewards to celebrate their joint success.

Behaviour Curriculum

At Overdale Infant School we have devised our own behaviour curriculum. This curriculum has been designed to build our pupils' character, preparing them for a successful future. Through it, we teach outstanding behaviour through clear expectations, routines and opportunities for all staff and children to rehearse, model and refine these behaviour.

Behaviour Management

Here at Overdale Infant School we use 1, 2, 3 Magic as our behaviour management system. This system is devised to keep everyone calm and to allow the children to understand what they have done wrong.

Restorative Approaches

In 2022 our staff team were trained in using a restorative approach to resolving conflict and preventing harm. Restorative approaches enable those who have been harmed to convey the impact of the harm to those responsible, and for those responsible to acknowledge this impact and take steps to put it right.

Anti-Bullying

At Overdale Infant School we want every child to enjoy their time at school, free from discrimination of any type. If a pupil feels they are being bullied then we hope they feel confident enough to speak to us and know that we will deal with it in a caring and sensitive way.

Bullying is wrong and harmful, and we do everything we can to prevent any form of discrimination.

We remind children what defines bullying and what they must do if they feel they are being bullied.

Exclusions 

Overdale Infant School seeks to avoid exclusions. These take place only for very serious incidents or when other strategies have been tried extensively to improve behaviour, but have not been successful. In most cases exclusion will be the last resort after a range of measures have been tried to improve the pupil’s behaviour and after a range of strategies have been put in place to address the inappropriate behaviour which may lead to exclusion.

The headteacher and staff will identify pupils whose behaviours place them at risk of exclusion, and seek additional provision to meet their individual needs, which could include working in partnership with other agencies e.g. the Educational Psychologist (EP) and Behaviour Support Team (BST).

Fixed term and permanent exclusions are used when other strategies and sanctions have not been effective over time or when there has been a single clear and serious breach of discipline
